Our Client manages a large food distribution contract from a modern multi-temperature distribution centre located in Kabul, Afghanistan on behalf of one of the countries who is participating in ISAF, the multi-national peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.
They are currently seeking an Assistant Transport Manager. This is a transport management role, broad in scope running a cost effective food distribution operation.
You will report into the Transport Manager and in addition to all the normal transport responsibilities you will be responsible for quality of service to the customer, staff recruitment and retention, health and safety and cost control.
You will assist in managing the transport components of the logistics chain from the point of embarkation to the distribution centres. You will need to identify and develop relationships with transport service providers and manage them on an on going basis and there will be a need to liaise with the Central Transport Department in Dubai in relation to sea, air and overland freight movements.
You will conduct audits on all transport activities and on an ongoing basis ensure strict compliance with our clients operating principles and procedures.
Service and operational standards will need to be good and you will still be expected to bring new ideas and processes to the table in order to increase profitability further. Supported by your management team, you will work on strategies that will help our client meet its targets.
As in any successful management position, the development and motivation of the team around you is essential, as is the ongoing strengthening of customer relationships.

Knowledge and Skills:
To meet this unique challenge, you will ideally be an ambitious transport professional with your transport management experience ideally gained in an fmcg / wholesaling environment. With outstanding leadership ability and a strong customer focus, you will have the confidence to win credibility and make an immediate contribution.
In addition you should have a working knowledge of HACCAP and ISO 9000 standards.
A military background would be very useful.
You should possess excellent communication skills in English and ideally one other language and be able to adapt to rapid changes in a positive manner and work to tight deadlines.
Superb inter-personal skills and instant credibility are essential as you will be inter-facing with a number of people from different backgrounds, nationalities and religions.
You will be resourceful with a flexible outlook, have the ability to multi-task in order to handle competing priorities and be able to fit in to an international dynamic and multi-cultural environment.
Finally you should possess a Drivers Licence.
This is an outstanding challenge for an accomplished transport professional looking for something different. Whilst our Clients operation is somewhat unique they are in it for the long term and are looking for a minimum of 18 to 24 month?s commitment.
The basic salary is paid in US Dollars and is tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee. In addition there is a bonus payable after 12 months service which is paid annually, increases in value over a 3 year period and is also paid in US Dollars and tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee.
Accommodation, laundry, local transport, health insurance and meals are provided free. In addition employees have the use of a phone to call family and friends and the internet for e-mails etc.
Western Ex-Patriate employees will receive 63 days annual leave per year and the working rota is approx 14 weeks on, 3.5 weeks off.
Western Ex-Patriate employees will receive 3 paid return economy flights per year and Mobilization and De-Mobilization flights are also paid for by our client.
